Rancho Christian Athletics is built on a foundation of competitive excellence, Christ-centered character, and the development of student-athletes on and off the field. Our programs compete at the highest levels while preparing athletes for leadership, teamwork, and lifelong impact.

From the Athletic Director

With over 20 years of experience as an athletic director and head coach, Waheed Mitchell has dedicated his career to building Christ-centered athletic programs grounded in discipline, development, and a championship mindset. He currently serves as the Athletic Director at Rancho Christian School, where he continues to invest in student-athletes through excellence, integrity, and service.

  • Before joining Rancho Christian, Mitchell served as Athletic Director at Linfield Christian School, overseeing a comprehensive 6–12 athletics program. Under his leadership, Linfield earned the Ambassador Cup twice—the only two times in school history the award has been received. The Ambassador Cup is awarded annually to the league’s top-performing athletic program across all sports and reflected the unified success of Linfield’s coaches, athletes, and community.

    Mitchell also served as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Linfield. When he took over in 2018, the program had just eight wins over the previous two seasons. Over the next seven years, he led the team through its most successful stretch in school history—climbing from CIF-SS Division 5A to 2AA and winning 129 games. Program highlights include:

    • CIF-SS 4A Championship (2021) – first in school history

    • CIF State Regional Finalist (2021)

    • Ambassador League Champions (2022, 2024) – including an undefeated season

    • Four consecutive 20+ win seasons (2020–2023)

    For his success, Mitchell was named CIF-SS 4A Coach of the Year in 2021 and Ambassador League Coach of the Year in both 2022 and 2024.

    Across his career—including coaching stops at The Rock Academy, Horizon Christian Academy, Balboa School, Chaparral, and Temecula Valley—Mitchell has compiled a 346–166 overall record (67.6%) and a 122–54 league record (69%), with:

    • 8 League Championships

    • 5 CIF Section Titles

    • 2 CIF Regional Runner-Up finishes

    • 2 CIF Regional Championships

    • 1 CIF State Championship

    At just 24 years old, he became the youngest coach in California history to win a boys basketball state championship, leading Horizon Christian Academy to the 2006 CIF D4 State Title.

    Player development has been a hallmark of Mitchell’s coaching career. He has mentored over 20 student-athletes who went on to compete at the next level, including 4 professionals, 9 NCAA Division I, 3 Division II, and 3 Division III players—some of whom advanced to professional careers in the NBA and overseas.

    His leadership is guided by the phrase: “One Team • One Goal • One Outcome,” reflecting his belief that transformational programs are built on shared values, relentless effort, and Christ-centered growth.

    Mitchell holds a Master’s in Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine and a Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame de Namur University, where he was also an All-Conference student-athlete. In addition to his role on the CIF Southern Section Public/Private Committee, he has also served as President of the Inland Valley Athletic Administrators Association (IVAAA) and Ambassador League President.
