Head Coach:

Coach Jim Kunau brings significant experience from his 21 years of service at Orange Lutheran High School, where he played a key role in the growth and recognition of the school. Well known for building Orange Lutheran’s football program into one of the best in the nation, his faith-centered career in education is hallmarked by his passion for the character and leadership development of young people.  He has a strong commitment to academic innovation and achievement, and the pursuit of athletic and artistic excellence.

2012 – 2014: Concordia University Irvine, Assistant Professor, in the Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration program. Jim teaches courses in Leadership and Ethics. Co-authored a book, Building Champions For Life, with Dr. Kent Schlichtemeier. It is currently in the final stages of editing with an anticipated summer 2014 publication.  Kunau also taught at the university level in Cal Lutheran’s MBA Program for 5 years in the 1990’s.

1991 – 2012: Orange Lutheran High School. Leadership, Management, and Teaching Experience:

  • Head Football Coach 19 years: 1993-2011. Record: 182-52-3. 13 League Championships (11 straight from 1998-2008), 2 CIF and 1 State Championship.

  • Athletic Director 5 years: 1997-2002.

  • Director of the American Leadership Institute 5 years: 2003-2008.

  • History Teacher 5 years: 1992-1997.

  • Varsity Assistant and JV Basketball Coach for 5 years, 1991 – 1996.

January 2013 – November 2013: Canyon High School (Anaheim) Head Football Coach. Record 5-6.

Honors and Achievements:

  • The Orange County Register’s “Coach of the Decade” (2000-2010).

  • CIF Southern Section “Champions of Character Award”.

  • CIF Southern Section Prep Star All-Star Game Head Coach for the South.

  • NIKE National and California Coach of the Year”.

  • CIF Division VI Coach of the Year” (Currently SW), 2004 and “PAC 5 Coach of the Year”,2006.

  • The Los Angeles Times “Southern California Coach of the Year”, 2004.

  • The Orange County Register’s “Coach of the Year”, 2004.

  • Coaches of Influence Award for “Exemplary Christian Leadership”.

  • ESPN/Under Armor “National All-Star Game Coach”, Orlando, Florida.

  • Spoke at the American Football Coaches Association National Convention (7,000 attendees) in Orlando, Florida in January 2010, as well as numerous other clinics around the country.
